Patients with inflammatory bowel disease have a higher risk of developing various types of cancer outside of the digestive tract, according to a recent meta-analysis. The study found that individuals with IBD are up to 45% more likely to develop malignancies such as bile duct, pulmonary, and hematologic cancers. This contradicts a previous meta-analysis that did not find an increased risk of extraintestinal cancers in this patient population. The findings highlight the importance of monitoring and managing cancer risk in individuals with inflammatory bowel disease.
