Researchers from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia found that non-Hispanic Black children with lower Child Opportunity Index scores are more likely to seek care for concussions in the emergency department than in primary or specialty care. The study highlights the need for emergency medicine physicians to receive specific training in diagnosing concussions and improving care equity. Individualized and early rehabilitation approaches are key for faster recovery, but most pediatric patients with concussions are not seen by specialty providers. Future research should focus on increasing capacity in primary care centers and organizations serving youth to better recognize and support concussions in vulnerable populations.
