Metformin, a common diabetes medication prescribed to pregnant women, can cross the placenta and may lead to fetal growth restrictions, obesity, and insulin resistance in children. Research found that the drug accumulates in various fetal organs, causing lower body weight. The drug’s levels in the fetus are almost as high as in the mother, regardless of her diet. Metformin exposure during pregnancy may increase the child’s risk of obesity and diabetes. Although previously considered safe, further investigation into the potential long-term effects of prenatal metformin use is warranted. Unlike other drugs, metformin does not undergo first-pass metabolism, exposing the fetus to adult doses.
