A study by researchers at Oregon Health & Science University found that Medicaid waivers provided for addiction treatment in large residential facilities did not lead to increased treatment or decreased nonfatal overdoses. These waivers were implemented in response to the opioid crisis, but the study found no overall benefit in the states that received them. The researchers suggest that additional actions are needed to address the nation’s overdose epidemic, such as improving access to medications for opioid use disorder, distributing naloxone, and increasing access to buprenorphine. Overall, the study highlights the need for more substantial federal action to address the crisis.
