A study published in Diabetologia found that overnight eating may increase the risk of chronic health conditions for night shift workers. The study involved 55 adults who were divided into groups based on their eating habits during night shifts. Participants who ate meals or snacks during the night had worse glucose tolerance compared to those who fasted. Insulin sensitivity was disrupted among all participants, indicating that night shifts can impair glucose metabolism. Researchers suggest that avoiding large meals while working night shifts and eating primarily during the day could be a simple intervention to manage health outcomes. Future trials will explore the impact of eating protein snacks on night shift workers.
