A study found that topical ivermectin treatment for rosacea increased Staphylococcus epidermidis on the skin, while reducing Demodex mites. Ten adults with rosacea were treated with ivermectin cream for 12 weeks. The density of Demodex mites decreased significantly on lesional skin, while S. epidermidis increased. The treatment also reduced papules and Clinician’s Erythema Assessment scores. The findings suggest that ivermectin may improve rosacea symptoms by modulating the skin microbiome beyond just targeting Demodex. Further research with larger sample sizes is needed to confirm these results. The study was led by Teruaki Nakatsuji, PhD, and published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
