The global prevalence of knee osteoarthritis has doubled in the past 50 years, making it a significant health issue affecting around 250 million people worldwide. A company in west Ireland, Relevium Medical, has been awarded €4.6 million in Government funding to develop a treatment for knee osteoarthritis that offers immediate and long-lasting relief. The project, called RestOAre, involves innovative therapies for chronic pain and disease progression associated with the condition. The research, led by University of Galway academics, includes pain-modelling, drug-screening, and analysis of biomolecules from marine organisms targeting receptors in the knee joint. This investment demonstrates the university’s commitment to research and innovation excellence.
