A recent study suggests that increasing physical activity at age 40 can extend lifespan. Americans who match the activity level of the top 25 percent of the population could add five years to their lifespan, while the least active might gain nearly 11 years by reaching the activity levels of the most active. The study used data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey and found that engaging in 160 minutes of walking daily could increase average lifespan by over five years. Moving the least active 25 percent to become as active as the top 25 percent could result in an average life expectancy gain of about 11 years.
