A study conducted in Sweden from 2006 to 2023 found that the use of the GLP-1 receptor agonists semaglutide and liraglutide was associated with a lower risk of alcohol use disorder (AUD) related hospitalizations compared to traditional AUD medications. Participants using semaglutide had the lowest risk of AUD-related hospitalization, followed by participants using liraglutide. Both medications also showed a reduced risk of substance use disorder and somatic hospitalizations. Traditional AUD medications had modest effectiveness. Researchers suggest that semaglutide and liraglutide could be effective treatments for AUD and further clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings. The study was published in JAMA Psychiatry.
