A study presented at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Annual Meeting found that around 20% of patients with periprosthetic joint infections of the knee were eligible for one-stage exchange. The study also showed that about 66% of ineligible patients had multiple reasons for not meeting eligibility criteria. The results highlight the need for more robust eligibility criteria to guide patient and surgeon decision-making. The study also emphasized the limitations of retrospective data comparing one-stage and two-stage exchange techniques due to significant selection bias. Lead researcher Dr. Nicholas A. Bedard of Mayo Clinic discussed the findings at the conference.
