Researchers at The University of Texas at El Paso have developed a portable device that can detect colorectal and prostate cancer more rapidly and affordably than current methods. This device, a biochip, is low-cost, sensitive, and eliminates the need for specialized instruments. It uses a microfluidic system and ‘paper-in-polymer-pond’ structure to capture cancer protein biomarkers from patient blood samples in just a few minutes. The device can analyze samples in one hour, compared to traditional methods that take up to 16 hours. The new technology has the potential to improve cancer outcomes by enabling early diagnosis in resource-limited settings, but further testing is needed before it can be used clinically.
