Scientists from Université de Montréal and IRCM have discovered the role of a protein complex in brain cell connectivity and cognitive behaviors. The study aims to understand the mechanisms of cognitive disorders like anxiety, autism, and schizophrenia, which are prevalent worldwide. The TrkC-PTPσ complex found in excitatory synapses regulates synapse development and contributes to cognitive functions through protein phosphorylation. Mice with mutations disrupting this complex displayed abnormal synapse organization, inactive synapses, heightened anxiety levels, and impaired social behaviors. The study provides insights into potential therapeutic strategies for mental illnesses. Published in The EMBO Journal, the research was funded by various research organizations.
