A study found that Black, American Indian, and Hispanic adolescents, as well as girls and Medicaid-insured adolescents, are more likely to undergo screening for alcohol or drugs at trauma centers compared to their White peers. Researchers analyzed data from over 85,000 adolescent patients at pediatric trauma centers and found disparities in screening rates. The study suggests that there may be clinician biases contributing to the differences in screening rates. The findings highlight the importance of high-quality screening for substance use in preventing injuries and promoting public health. The study was published in JAMA Network Open in October 2024.
