Researchers have found that Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) therapy could be as effective as antidepressants for treating anxiety disorders. MBSR, originally designed for stress management, is now being used to treat various illnesses, including anxiety and depression. A recent study compared the effectiveness of MBSR with the antidepressant escitalopram in alleviating symptoms of agoraphobia, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and social anxiety disorder. The study found no significant differences in overall anxiety reduction between MBSR and escitalopram, but fewer side effects were reported in the mindfulness group. This suggests that MBSR could be a viable alternative to medication for those seeking relief from anxiety disorders.
