A blood test can predict preeclampsia risk in laboring women, which can lead to preventative measures to protect both mother and baby. Preeclampsia, a dangerous complication of pregnancy, affects 5-10% of pregnant women and is more common in Black women. The ratio of two blood proteins, fibrinogen and albumin, can indicate preeclampsia risk when measured during routine blood tests upon admission to the hospital. Higher ratios are associated with increased inflammation and health risks. Identifying this risk early can allow for extra precautions, such as more frequent monitoring and early pain management interventions, to reduce the likelihood of severe preeclampsia complications.
