A study by the University of Pennsylvania and 26 U.S. children’s hospitals has found that elevated body mass index (BMI) is significantly linked to a higher risk of developing post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) in children and young adults. The study showed a 25.4% increased risk for PASC in those with obesity and a 42.1% increased risk in those with severe obesity. PASC includes persistent symptoms lasting beyond four weeks after the acute phase of COVID-19, with common symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, and muscle pain. The study emphasizes the need for targeted care to prevent chronic conditions in at-risk children and young adults.
