A recent paper in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute suggests that certain early-stage changes in the prostate should no longer be labeled as cancer. This proposal is based on the fact that low-grade prostate cancer, known as GG1, rarely spreads or causes symptoms and may not require aggressive treatment. The discussion around changing the terminology from “cancer” to something less alarming was prompted by the high rate of GG1 cases detected and concerns about overdiagnosis and overtreatment. The goal is to reduce the psychological burden on patients and improve public health outcomes by reevaluating the classification of these early-stage prostate changes.
