A recent study published in The Lancet Public Health Journal shows that reducing global smoking prevalence to just 5% by 2050 could prevent millions of premature deaths and significantly increase life expectancy. Currently, smoking has resulted in more than 175 million deaths and nearly 4.30 billion years of life lost. If smoking trends continue, life expectancy will rise to 78.3 years by 2050, but 29.3 billion years will still be lost to smoking-related health issues. Eliminating smoking by 2023 could save 2.04 billion years of life, with life expectancy reaching 77.6 years for men and 81 years for women by 2050. Further efforts to reduce and eliminate smoking globally are crucial to saving lives.
