At the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting, Jason Betz discussed how preoperative and perioperative variables can predict ocular pain following refractive surgery. Approximately 800,000 refractive procedures are performed each year, with some patients experiencing persistent ocular symptoms like burning, discomfort, dryness, and photophobia. Betz conducted a study with 109 patients who underwent LASIK or PRK and found that risk factors for persistent pain included ocular pain before surgery, intensity of pain 1 day after surgery, use of oral anti-allergy medication, and preoperative depression symptoms. Betz and colleagues are working on developing diagnostic and prognostic models for different pain phenotypes and therapeutic targets.
