A recent study published in JAMA Health Forum reveals a sharp decline in menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) use among postmenopausal American women over the past 20 years. The study found significant disparities across racial and ethnic groups, highlighting a decrease in MHT prescriptions since 2002. The decline in MHT use was seen across all age groups and racial and ethnic categories. Factors such as age, BMI, family income-to-poverty ratio, and insurance coverage influenced MHT use. Non-Hispanic Black women, who often experience more severe menopausal symptoms, were less likely to receive MHT. Further research is needed to identify safe and effective MHT options for women experiencing menopausal symptoms.
