The BMA’s General Practitioners Committee for the UK has voted to stop hiring physician associates in general practice and phase out existing roles. At a meeting on October 17, a majority of members voted in favor of a motion stating that the role of PAs in general practice was “fundamentally unsafe.” The motion prohibits new appointments of physician associates in general practice and calls for the phase out of existing roles. The committee believes that PAs do not have a place in general practice and should be replaced by other healthcare professionals.
