A study found that over half of US peer reviewers for major medical journals received industry payments totaling over $64 million between 2020-2022. Research payments exceeded $1 billion, with median payment per physician at $7614. Male reviewers received higher payments than female reviewers. The need for more transparency in industry payments in the peer review process was highlighted. The study was published in JAMA by Christopher J. D. Wallis from the University of Toronto. Limitations include unknown relevance of financial ties to reviewed papers and potential unaccounted payments from other sources. Wallis disclosed personal fees from several pharmaceutical companies.
