Applications to specialty training places in general practice and psychiatry are on the rise, which is good news for historically understaffed specialties. However, medical leaders warn that without an increase in training posts, this increase in applications may not result in more doctors on the front lines of care. In 2024, there were a total of 59,698 applications for 12,743 specialty training posts in England, with a competition ratio of 4.7. This is an increase from previous years and shows a growing interest in these specialties. Doctors who do not secure a training post may work as locally employed or locum doctors instead.
