Researchers at Indiana University are part of a new NIH program on “oculomics” using the eye to detect diseases in the body. They have received a $4.8 million grant to develop advanced ophthalmoscopes for early disease detection like diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s. The technology uses adaptive optics for high-resolution eye scans. The project includes researchers from Northwestern, Stanford, and New York Eye and Ear. They will integrate their projects into one device and use machine learning to interpret the results quickly. The final step involves testing on clinical volunteers to make the technology available for routine eye exams.
