The Department for Work and Pensions and housing associations are burdening general practitioners with paperwork requests, diverting doctors from seeing patients. In a poll of 2190 UK doctors, 30% reported spending 11-30% of their time on tasks not related to patient care, including housing and benefits requests. The Royal College of General Practitioners conducted the survey from May to June 2024, with results exclusively shared with The BMJ. RCGP chair Kamila Hawthorne highlighted that GPs consider social determinants of health, such as housing and benefits, when treating patients. However, with limited time and resources, excessive administrative tasks can impact patient care.
