Many female International Medical Graduates from Pakistan and Sudan move to Ireland with families, as cultural norms often involve living with extended family for support. However, in Ireland, finding childcare is difficult, with long waiting lists for creches and schools. Expensive nanny services and lack of family support make balancing work and home responsibilities challenging for female IMGs. This has led to stress and a potential exodus from medical careers. To address these issues, the government and HSE should consider steps such as establishing childcare areas in hospitals, priority admissions for female IMGs’ children, flexible working hours, and compassionate leave allowances.
