A study published in the European Heart Journal found that increased alcohol consumption in young adults with no history of cardiac arrhythmias led to a significant increase in heart rate and atrial tachycardias. The MunichBREW II study involved 193 participants who consumed alcohol and were monitored for ECG readings over a period of 48 hours. Researchers observed higher heart rates and arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation, during and after excessive alcohol consumption. The study suggests that alcohol-induced modulation of the autonomic nervous system may contribute to arrhythmia incidence. The researchers noted limitations in confirming preexisting arrhythmias or cardiovascular disorders due to self-reported medical histories.
