Differential gene expression linked to alcohol use disorder, offering new treatment possibilities

A recent study in Molecular Psychiatry identified gene expression differences associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD) in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) brain regions. The study conducted meta-analyses across multiple datasets and detected 476 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) linked with AUD, with 25 overlapping genes between NAc and PFC. The findings shed light on the neurobiological mechanisms of AUD and potential targets for intervention. Further analysis revealed potential drug repurposing opportunities for treating AUD, with 29 drug compounds targeting DEGs in NAc and 436 compounds targeting DEGs in PFC. This study’s robust approach provides valuable insights into AUD-associated gene expression patterns and therapeutic strategies.
