New research suggests that excess body fat may be responsible for 40% of postmenopausal hormone-positive breast cancer cases. This contrasts with current estimates based on BMI linking only 1 in 10 cases to excess weight. The study compared BMI with a more accurate measure of body fat called CUN-BAE, finding that excess body fat contributed to 38% of breast cancer cases. The researchers suggest that traditional BMI estimates may underestimate the impact of obesity on breast cancer risk and that more accurate measures of body fat should be considered. This information could help in better assessing the cancer burden attributable to obesity in postmenopausal women.
