Obesity during pregnancy increases the risk of complications such as miscarriage, preterm birth, and preeclampsia regardless of a woman’s country of birth, according to a study by researchers at Linköping University and Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. The study examined nearly two million pregnancies and found that promoting a healthy weight could prevent pregnancy complications for all women. Specifically, the study suggested that about half of all cases of gestational diabetes could be prevented if women started their pregnancies at a normal weight. The impact of weight on pregnancy complications varies, with high body weight particularly increasing the risk of gestational diabetes.
