A study published in JAMA Network Open found that beer or cider consumption raised the likelihood of gout in both men and women more than other types of alcohol. Higher total alcohol consumption also increased the risk of gout, especially in men. The study, which analyzed data from the U.K. Biobank, excluded participants with certain health conditions and found that beer or cider carried the greatest risk of gout. Men consumed more alcohol than women, with beer being the most consumed type. The study suggests that the association between alcohol consumption and gout varies between sexes.
