New research shows that nearly 20% of patients receiving medication for asthma or COPD were prescribed multiple courses of steroid tablets within a year, totaling over 45,000 patients. The Asthma Society of Ireland warns that overuse of these tablets can be harmful. Patients with uncontrolled asthma may need medical review. It is recommended to manage asthma with inhaled steroids rather than potent tablets. Steroid tablets have adverse side effects, both short-term and long-term. The Society calls for standardized care and expansion of the Chronic Disease Management Programme to address high rates of poorly controlled asthma in Ireland and reduce reliance on steroid tablets.
