A study presented at the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Annual Meeting found that adjuvant radiation after clear margin surgery decreased the risk of local and locoregional recurrence and nodal metastasis in patients with localized high-risk cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. The study involved 1,267 patients with high-risk tumors who underwent Mohs surgery or wide local excision. Adjuvant radiation reduced the likelihood of local recurrence by 53% at 5 years and decreased nodal metastasis risk. However, adjuvant radiation did not impact disease-specific death. Researchers emphasized the importance of considering patients’ functional status when discussing adjuvant radiation therapy.
