Owning and playing on game consoles during the COVID-19 pandemic improved mental health among Japanese children and adults, according to a study published in Nature Human Behavior. Researchers found that people who owned a Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 5 experienced less psychological distress. Children who played on the Nintendo Switch experienced greater mental health improvements than adults. The study surveyed 97,602 people aged 10 to 69 between 2020 and 2022. Winning a Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 5 in a lottery was associated with lower psychological distress and higher life satisfaction. Playing on the consoles also improved mental health, with benefits diminishing when play exceeded 3 hours per day.
