The Census Bureau reported that the percentage of uninsured Americans remained stable at 8% in 2023. This was due to expansions of public programs like the Affordable Care Act. However, millions of Americans were dropped from Medicaid rolls after pandemic protections ended. Enrollment in Medicaid peaked in April 2023 before the “unwinding” process started. Despite fears of increased uninsured rates, efforts were made to ensure people found alternative coverage. Factors such as a strong economy, low unemployment, and enhanced federal subsidies contributed to more people having health insurance. The full impact of the Medicaid unwinding won’t be known until the 2026 report.
