Successful co-production can help tackle inequalities in maternal health outcomes

The MBRRACE-UK report from October 2023 highlights ongoing disparities in birth outcomes for women from ethnic minorities in the UK. Maternal death risks are significantly higher among black and Asian women compared to white women. Despite calls for individualized care and interventions, women from ethnic minorities feel unheard and excluded from solutions. To address this, involving these women in developing interventions is crucial. A community-based intervention project, led by Shuby Puthussery, engaged diverse community members in co-producing tailored solutions to improve antenatal care uptake. Flexibility in engagement methods, clear communication, and shared ownership of outcomes were key factors in the project’s success.
