In a study presented at the ECNP Congress in Milan, a comparison was made between psilocybin and escitalopram, a common SSRI antidepressant. The study found that over a 6-month period, both treatments showed similar improvements in depressive symptoms. However, patients taking psilocybin reported better psychological well-being, social functioning, and a greater sense of meaning in life. Psilocybin also showed additional benefits like improved sexual drive compared to SSRIs. The researchers suggested that psilocybin therapy could offer a more holistic treatment option for depression. The study involved 59 patients with moderate to severe depression and highlighted the potential positive mental health benefits of psilocybin.
