A study found no correlation between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and the risk of developing movement disorders in patients taking antipsychotics. Researchers investigated this association in 89 adult patients at a psychiatric facility and found that only eight patients had movement disorder symptoms. There was no significant association between Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale scores and HDL-C levels. The study suggests focusing on removing offending medications rather than hypothesizing about physiological factors like HDL-C when managing drug-induced movement disorders. Early recognition can lead to rapid intervention and reduced risk of permanent symptoms. The study was published in Innovations in Clinical Neuroscience in 2024.
