Childhood cancer survivors have a 1.5% cumulative incidence of keratinocyte carcinomas over 20 years after diagnosis, with those exposed to radiation therapy having a 2.6% incidence. A study of 25,658 participants found that radiation therapy was the dominant risk factor for developing KCs, with a higher incidence among those who had received radiotherapy. The study highlights the importance of healthcare providers being aware of the increased skin cancer risk in survivors and the need for ongoing screening. While the overall incidence decreased over time, vigilance and awareness are still essential for survivors. The study was published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology in 2024.
