STING protein plays new role in cellular stress clearance and survival

The protein STING, known for its role in antiviral signaling, has been found to also aid in cellular stress clearance and cell survival. This new function was discovered by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh. STING activates mechanisms to combat threats when DNA leaks into the cytosol. Chronic activation of STING has been linked to aging-related diseases. Activation of STING leads to the production of lysosomes and increased autophagy, both important for longevity and health. Targeting components downstream of STING may be a better therapeutic approach. The newly discovered function of STING in maintaining cellular quality control may have evolutionary significance.
