After the Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, tubal sterilization rates in women rose in the U.S. The decision overturned the 1972 Roe v Wade ruling that established a woman’s constitutional right to abortion. The study found an increase in tubal sterilization procedures in states that banned or limited abortion access, with a 3% rise each month in banned states. Researchers cautioned that this trend is concerning as tubal sterilization is irreversible, highlighting the potential impact of abortion laws on women’s contraceptive choices. The study analyzed claims data of women aged 18 to 49 from 36 states and Washington, D.C.
