Shingles Vaccine Protects Against Dementia

admin

A study published in Nature Medicine in July 2024 by Oxford University scientists found that getting vaccinated against shingles can reduce the risk of developing dementia later in life. Through analyzing data from over a quarter million American senior citizens, researchers discovered that those who received the shingles vaccine delayed the onset of dementia by an average of 164 days, or 17% longer than those who did not get the vaccine. The study also considered other variables such as early death, COVID-19 impact, and general health consciousness. The link between the varicella-zoster shingles vaccine and delayed cognitive decline is promising, with potential benefits beyond just preventing shingles.
