Scientists develop new method for relocating misplaced proteins

Cells rely on proteins being in the right place, with diseases like cancer and neurodegenerative disorders being linked to misplaced proteins. Steven Banik’s lab at Stanford University has developed a method to force misplaced proteins back to their proper locations within cells using targeted relocalization activating molecules (TRAMs). By rewiring natural shuttles in the cell, proteins can be moved to different parts where they belong. This strategy, published in Nature, shows promise in correcting protein misplacement related to diseases, such as ALS and cancers, with potential for therapeutic benefits and creating new cell functions. The method could unlock new biological understandings in the future.
