Debra Ragoonanan, a nursing assistant at a state-run veterans home in Massachusetts, experienced health issues including a brain aneurysm following a deadly Covid-19 outbreak at the facility in 2020. The trauma of the outbreak continues to affect Ragoonanan and other caregivers who have reported symptoms of PTSD and long-lasting effects. Investigations into the outbreak led to changes in leadership and a $56 million settlement for veterans and families, but front-line caregivers have received little relief. Health care workers, particularly lower-wage workers, faced risky conditions during the pandemic and continue to suffer from physical and mental health issues.
