The European Society of Cardiology has updated its hypertension guidelines, emphasizing simpler and more aggressive blood pressure targets. The new guidelines introduce a category for elevated blood pressure, defined as a systolic BP of 120-139 mm Hg or a diastolic BP of 70-89 mm Hg, which requires cardiovascular risk assessment for treatment decisions. The new goal for most treated patients is a systolic BP of 120-129 mm Hg. Lifestyle recommendations include changes to exercise advice and potassium supplementation. The guidelines also include recommendations for the use of renal denervation in certain cases. The updated guidelines align more closely with US guidelines, emphasizing lower blood pressure targets and evidence-based treatment approaches.
