The head of Africa CDC has warned that mpox is accelerating antimicrobial resistance in Africa. The director general, Jean Kaseya, stated at a symposium in New York that mpox is the major driver of antimicrobial resistance in the continent. He mentioned that mpox is leading to the misuse of antibiotics without prescription as people seek treatment. Weekly figures from Africa CDC show 6439 confirmed mpox cases with 840 deaths reported. The agency’s warning comes ahead of the UN meeting on antimicrobial resistance on 26 September. The concern is that mpox is fueling the misuse of antibiotics and contributing to the resistance crisis in Africa.
