A close contact of the person in Missouri with an unexplained H5 bird flu infection last month was also sick at the same time but was not tested for influenza, as reported by the CDC. The CDC did not mention this case during a press briefing, but the individual’s illness suggests possible human-to-human transmission of the virus. H5 viruses are known for causing massive poultry outbreaks and have infected about 900 people worldwide. It is unclear how the infection occurred in Missouri as the individual had no known exposures to animals. The CDC is investigating further to determine the source of the infection.
