The government has announced that hospitals in areas with high rates of economic inactivity due to ill health will be prioritized for expanding the High Intensity Theatre (HIT) model to reduce waiting lists for surgery. The HIT model, pioneered by Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London, will be implemented in 20 hospitals in these areas to help more people get back to work. Health Secretary Wes Streeting unveiled the plans at Labour’s annual conference in Liverpool. This initiative is part of a larger effort to address a backlog of 7.6 million elective treatment procedures across England.
