Julian, born in Penketh, Cheshire, grew up in Liverpool and North Wales. He excelled in school and studied medicine at Edinburgh University. After marrying nurse Edna in 1946, he worked in Wakefield before studying psychological medicine at Leeds University. During national service at Royal Victoria hospital, he encountered patients with what would now be considered post-traumatic stress disorder. He was discharged and did not serve in Korea due to medical reasons. Julian went on to have a successful career in psychiatry, making significant contributions to mental health care.
