Pittsburgh-based health insurer Highmark will be the first to cover AppliedVR’s RelieVRx virtual reality therapy for chronic low back pain. Eligible members can get a prescription for the immersive therapy without prior authorization. The program includes daily VR sessions with mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy techniques to help manage pain. Highmark’s senior medical director expressed commitment to using technology to improve outcomes and reduce costs. AppliedVR’s CEO highlighted the need for non-invasive, drug-free options for chronic pain sufferers. The company has also partnered with Lovell Government Services to support sales in federal healthcare systems and conducted studies on the impact of VR therapy on chronic pain.
